Muse Bassist Chris Wolstenholme Quit Booze After 'Puking Up Blood'

Chris WolstenholmeOh, the life of a rock star. Plenty of artists have suffered from the partying, the girls, the drugs and, of course, the drinking. Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme got so caught up in those ways that he nearly died from his dependency on alcohol.

In an interview with Q Magazine (via Music Room), Wolstenholme recalls the moment he hit rock bottom "I was actually losing my mind. I had to drink to get out of bed in the morning. It got to the point one Christmas morning where I was actually puking up blood."

Though the musician has been clean and sober since the release of Muse's smash album, 'The Resistance,' he also remembers how his judgment drove him to ridiculous conclusions.

"My rational thought at that time was, 'Oh I won't drink spirits today, I'll just drink beer.' You just don't think properly. You don't really consider that you're killing yourself ... Or even if you do, you get to the point where you don't care about anything anymore."

Wolstenholme's bandmate, singer Matt Bellamy, confessed that he had no idea of the extent of his bassist's drinking, saying "The thing with him is he's such a good musician that his motor skills or something just aren't affected."

"So he would come in and play brilliantly and then we wouldn't see him for a bit," Bellamy told Q. "We'd have a great gig and he'd go off to his room so we wouldn't really know what was going on."

Victoria Beckham won't bare baby bump

Pregnant star Victoria Beckham has no plans to show off her baby bump by posing nude.

Victoria Beckham doesn't want to "flaunt" her pregnancy by posing nude.

The singer-turned-fashion designer is due to give birth to her fourth child, a daughter, next month and though she feels "proud" to be expecting again, she has no intention of displaying her bump like so many other celebrities.

Asked if she would pose naked, Victoria - who is married to soccer superstar David Beckham - said: "Nope. Sadly not. I'm not really one of these people that likes to go out and pose and flaunt being pregnant. Not like there's anything wrong in that. I'm so proud to be pregnant and I feel so blessed and so happy, I really do. But I'm just not that kind of person. So, no, I won't be taking my clothes off. I don't think anyone needs to see that, other than my husband. Absolutely not."

But not in an obnoxious way at all. I love the French clothes for little girls. I like little girls to look like little girls.

Victoria - who has sons Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, eight, and six-year-old Cruz with David - also revealed her unborn baby already has an "impressive" wardrobe.

She added to WWD: "But not in an obnoxious way at all. I love the French clothes for little girls. I like little girls to look like little girls."

Despite admitting it can be a struggle to combine her career with family life, Victoria insists she wouldn't do things differently.

She added: "As any working mum out there knows, it really is like juggling glass balls when you've got the kids and a husband to look after, and you're passionate about your career. It's a lot. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm blessed."

Usher wants Pippa Middleton in her underwear

Usher has his eye on Kate Middleton's little sister

Usher is launching his own lingerie line

Usher has revealed that he wants Kate's little sister Pippa Middleton to be the face of his new underwear range.

The R&B singer watched Pippa, 27, step out in her figure-hugging gown at the Royal Wedding in April and quickly made plans to hire her as a model.

'I don't think there's a more beautiful, more stunning, more talked-about woman in the world at the moment,' says Usher, 32.

'I'm going to be approaching her in the next few weeks and setting up a meeting this summer.'

The savvy businessman knows it would make good sense to have Pippa - whose shapely bottom has become a worldwide phenomenon - front his campaign.

'The great thing about her is that she would be a global brand. Everybody knows her now, she would be perfect,' Usher tells Look magazine.

'I am sure everybody is trying to sign her up and she won't be cheap, but she has the looks and the popularity to really establish a new product.'

An Angel's Idea for a Fund

Over the last year I have spent more time talking to interesting women about a variety of topics. What kind of work they do, their companies, their ideas, their families, how to fund more women entrepreneurs, how be more transparent about our lives to help the next generation, etc.

One of the many topics is how to connect more women angels, like myself. I certainly have a small handful of people that I show businesses to that come across my desk. I am curious what they might think and perhaps if we would invest together. Also, it helps when doing diligence. Regardless of those conversations, there is a lot of singular focus and there is something to said for group that is focused on the same thing, like a company.

I have been thinking about what a womans fund would look like for a while. I have investments in tech based companies but I also have investments in companies that for lack of a better description are brick and mortar models. Certainly the brick and mortar models use tech but their businesses only use it because it helps them expand and everyone must have a social media/site as part of their business these days.

Here is my idea. 50% of the capital raised would go to tech related businesses.

Tech related is a broad topic so I define it as a business that uses tech as a platform to create their business and without the technology piece, they wouldn't be in business. I have already invested in companies like that such as Food52, Red Stamp, Catch-a-Fire, Curbed/Eater/Racked, Nest.io, Editd, Edition01 and DailyWorth. Btw, except for Curbed Media, all of these companies were started by women entrepreneurs and most of them have a balance of women and men at the top of the company. To me, that makes for a much better organization.

The other 50% would go towards more brick and mortar operations. Those term sheets are much different. I would set up a group of advisors around these businesses to help insure their success. Where in the tech world you generally have multiple investors that can give advice and help the entrepreneurs grow their company, in the brick and mortar not so much. There are a few models in the non-profit world where money has been given to women to start their own businesses and there is a path that they follow that helps the entrepreneur avoid many pitfalls.

Those businesses, again started by women entrepreneurs, have a difficult time get funding. Think of a woman in a community who is interested in a business where she provides all the sweatshirts, t-shirts, sweatpants, etc. to all the local schools in the area. A bank is not interested in funding someone like that but perhaps we would.

If we could come up with something where more women are getting funded to create companies that could grow in range from $10M to $100M that are evenly balanced between men and women at the top and provide jobs opportunites for people who have chosen to stay home and want to work hours that work with their life style or want to re-enter the work place, the impact in the economy and communities could be significant.

Not saying I am doing this but am just thinking out loud.

This is an article by Joanne Wilson, a The NextWomen contributor. Joanne's blog can be found here.

Dennis McCarthy: Just by playing the game, they're winners

Forty young men with special needs played in the Special Sports League all-star game Sunday at the Milken Center basketball gym in West Hills. Each of the men received medals.

The players high-fived everybody in sight, did cartwheels across the basketball floor, took shots at the wrong basket, stopped in mid-dribble to blow kisses to their moms up in the stands, and put up some of the wildest shots you've ever seen.

Hands down, the Special Sports League all-star game Sunday afternoon at the Milken Center basketball gym in West Hills was the most exciting one I've ever seen.

You never knew what was going to happen, but when it did you cheered and clapped like crazy because what you were seeing was pure beauty and innocence.

Forty young men with special needs playing their hearts out and just having fun - being the star for once in their lives.

I had the honor of awarding each of them gold medals before the game because we all knew the outcome.

The game would end in a tie just as it always does. The final score in the Special Sports League means nothing. Only participating and having fun does.

So thanks to all the parents sitting up in the stands clapping and cheering for all the players. Without their tireless commitment and love for their children, none of this happens.

And thank you to Jacques and Mary Hay for putting their hearts and money into this special sports league, and the summer camp they sponsor every year at the West

Valley Jewish Community Center for special needs children.

Winners, all of them.

A few hours after the game I was sitting in a back room at Maggiano's Restaurant in Woodland Hills breaking bread with the cast of "The Godfather."

My buddy John Antonucci invited me to meet his pals in the Grandsons of Italy. They were having a big sit-down with their wives and girlfriends.

Vinnie Corbo, Tony di Milo, Bill Poleri, John Murgo and a lot of other guys who said they'd rather not see their names in the newspaper.

One of the Grandsons' guiding principles is "to eat, laugh, and argue a moot point."

These guys talk tough, but I know the truth. They're a bunch of pussycats.

Every Christmas they throw a big party at St. Charles Catholic Church in Toluca Lake for more than 300 special needs kids from all over Los Angeles.

A couple of times during the year they cook big Italian dinners and brighten the lives of senior citizens in the Valley who don't get many laughs anymore.

These guys throw money around like they earned it legitimately. And, man, do they like to rib each other. Lots of laughs.

If you've got ties to the old country, the Grandsons of Italy want to talk to you. Don't disappoint them. Call 818-323-4041 or email them at goiia@yahoo.com.

They meet a couple of times a month over at Vitello's in Studio City.

And finally, I want to thank all the people who have called and emailed me asking how my book "Here's to the Winners" is doing.

Great. If we sell another 3,000 copies, we'll break even. Go online or stop by the Daily News anytime and pick up a signed copy.

My kids will thank you.

Critic's Corner Thursday: 'Big Bang Theory,' 'Community

By Robert Bianco, USA TODAY

?You get your choice of funny repeats to start your evening tonight. CBS' The Big Bang Theory (8 ET/PT) reaches back to the 2009 season for an amusing outing that finds the boys geeking out over the discovery of a precious souvenir from The Lord of the Rings.

But you can have an equally good time at Community (NBC, 8 ET/PT), where the gang celebrates Troy's birthday at a bar and discovers a new side to Shirley ? while someone else spots a side to Abed that isn't actually there.

?A shark gets loose in a CSI (CBS, 9 ET/PT) repeat that also marked the departure of Liz Vassey's Wendy.

Considering Marg Helgenberger is cutting back on her commitment next season and Laurence Fishburne is leaving, losing Vassey looks like an even bigger mistake now than it did then.

?Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) gets in trouble on The Mentalist (CBS, 10 ET/PT) when a man she's supposed to be protecting gets murdered.

It's a good episode, made even better by the terrific young actress playing the man's daughter: Kaitlyn Dever, who was so phenomenal this season as Loretta on Justified and is on the big screen now in Bad Teacher.

Countess LuAnn de Lesseps Release Music Video for "Chic C'est La Vie," World Groans

We really shouldn't post this story under our "music" tag.

But Countess LuAnn de Lesseps has released the official video for "Chic C'est La Vie," the track she hopes will ratchet up her non-existent singing career.

The Countess received help from from Real Housewives of New York castmates Jill Zarin and Kelly Bensimon, but couldn't believe they were the only ones to volunteer.

"It was very disappointing that the other ladies wouldn't be part of it. The other girls didn't come, they didn't think it was appropriate. I didn't want anyone to feel like they were being excluded so I invited everyone. And let's face it, I sing about them in the song."

The term "sing" is used VERY loosely, as you can see/listen to here:

Denise Richards adopts a baby girl

Actress Denise Richards is now the proud mother of three with the adoption of a baby girl.

Peter Kramer/AP

Actress Denise Richards is now the proud mother of three with the adoption of a baby girl.

Whoa, baby! More than half a year after ex Charlie Sheen first stormed front pages with a highly publicized meltdown at the Plaza Hotel, Denise Richards is proving that she's doing just fine without him.

A rep for the actress, 40, confirmed to Us Weekly that Richards is now indeed the proud mother of a weeks-old little sister for daughters Sam, 7, and Lola, 5.

"Eloise Joni Richards is named after Denise's mom (Joni) and Denise and her daughters Sami and Lola chose the name Eloise," the rep said. "Denise and Eloise's big sister couldn't be happier and feel incredibly blessed."

Coincidence? During the time of Sheen's drug-fueled, porn star-infusedmeltdown, Richards and her daughters were ironicallystaying at the Eloise Suite at the Plaza Hotel.

Richards, who has been quietly fulfilling single-parent duties while Sheen frolicks with his goddesses at his Beverly Hills mansion, tweeted her excitement about the news.

"Thank you all for your sweet messages," she wrote. "The girls and I are over the moon and so is my dad Grandpa Irv...xo."

Meanwhile, the troubled actor isn't doing so great, with his last remaining goddess, Natalie Kenly, moving out of his home just last week, and his character on CBS's "Two and a Half Men" being driven off a cliff in the upcoming season.

Additionally, TV's highest paid actor will have to shell out $55,000 a month for child support to his other ex, Brooke Mueller, from his Warner Bros. Television paycheck. The hefty monthly payments will go toward support for Sheens' twin sons, and were part of a divorce settlement he and Mueller reached earlier this year.

TMZ broke the story, Rubio was arrested for disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice and refusal to obey a lawful command following a minor car accident on Saturday.

Rubio was placed inside the police vehicle -- but she was NOT taken to jail ... in part because she told cops she had to get home to breastfeed her child.

According to the police report, Rubio yelled at the first officer who responded to the car accident scene ... referring to cops as a "bunch of liars."

Rubio was eventually issued a summons to appear in court at a later date.

Kevin James, Adam Sandler to reteam for 'Valet Guys'?

Kevin James and Adam Sandler are in talks to reteam for 'Valet Guys. '

By George Lange, Universal Pictures

Kevin James and Adam Sandler are in talks to reteam for 'Valet Guys. '

And if all goes according to plan, Kevin James will headline a third flick with his pal Adam Sandler. He's written the comedy Valet Guys, and Sandler is currently reading the script.

"We're two guys in our 40s valeting in Miami. We just get dumped on by a lot of people. A guy dumps on us too much and we take his car out for a ride. It creates a whole crazy weekend," says James. "It will hopefully be me and Sandler, shooting in Miami in January. He's got the script now. He hasn't jumped completely on board."

And if he does, it's another chance for James and Sandler to mix some work with lots of play. The two are buddies who hang out in real life. And his daughters Sienna-Marie, 5 and Shea, 4, play with Sandler's two girls. The kids even attended the mobile school Sandler sets up when he's shooting a movie away from L.A.

Recently, Sandler and James overlapped in Boston, where both were filming separate flicks.

"Oh yeah, Happy Madison Academy, in the Mandarin Oriental, in Boston. My kids went. They made three or four rooms. I walked into these rooms and they're preschool rooms, with sandboxes and blackboards. The kids are right there and continue with their schooling and have so much fun together," says James. "The kids get along so well. The wives get along great. We go on vacation with them all the time. It's really nice, especially in Hollywood, to have someone you can talk to and has been through everything. He knows how people treat other people."

Sandler, says James, "has been so instrumental in my career. He put me in Chuck & Larry. He put me above the title with him, which he rarely does. We became such great friends."

And Sandler is something of a role model to James, both in terms of how he's structured his career and how he tends to always work with the same people.

"Just to see the way he runs a movie set and uses the people he does. Everybody, opening jobs to them and helping them. It's the greatest atmosphere," says James.

Kate Moss Heads Out in Notting Hill

Photo: INFdaily.com

Just days before her wedding (she?s marrying Jamie Hince this Friday) Kate Moss was spotted strolling through Notting Hill, dressed in a chic black casual outfit. Wearing a bird print buttoned-down shirt by Miu Miu, which she wore with a black pair of tailored shorts, a black blazer, oversized floppy hat and flat black pumps, Ms. Moss looked as chic as ever as she gears up for her big day. Kate is 37 years old now, but still looks amazing in a tiny pair of shorts ? does she ever age? Her youthful, carefree dress-sense has always made her stand out, while a good blazer is the backbone of her wardrobe ? successfully adding a tailored look to most of her outfits.

Kate looks great here ? and that floppy hat provides great coverage so that thepaparazzican?t even get a glimpse at her face properly (perhaps she got a round of pre-wedding botox?). It will be interesting to see what kind of dress Kate decides upon for her wedding ? undoubtedly she won?t look a day past 30 ? how does she do it?

Cheryl Cole will celebrate turning 28 with a lavish £20,000 birthday bash on Friday (01.07.11).

Cheryl Cole is spending £20,000 on a lavish birthday party for herself.

The 'Parachute' singer has not been seen in public since being fired from the US 'X Factor' and turning down an offer to return to the UK show last month but plans to celebrate turning 28 tomorrow (30.06.11) with a spectacular bash at an undisclosed London location on Friday (01.07.11).

According to the Daily Star newspaper, the stylish purple and black invitation sent out to friends - including her Girls Aloud bandmates, record company executives and some former 'X Factor' colleagues - reads: "You are invited to celebrate Cheryl's birthday. Friday 1st July. 9pm til late.

"Venue to be advised. London."

It also breaks my heart a little when i hear that some of you worry about me and need to know that I am ok, so I want to PROMISE you that I am absolutely fine and more than OK! (sic)

It is not known if Cheryl's ex-husband Ashley Cole - who she is rumoured to be considering reconciling with - will be at the party, but her friend and new manager will.i.am is expected to be there.

The email address guests are asked to RSVP to ends with @iambizzy.com, which is thought to be an address for the Black Eyed Peas star.

Though Cheryl hasn't been seen in public since her 'X Factor' axing, she recently took to her website to reassure fans she is OK.

She said: "I have had the weirdest past few weeks (nothing unusual there though.) I wouldn't even know how to begin to tell you all about it.

"I have had the time that I have not had in so long to just chill with my loved ones and do the normal things that I like to do. See my friends and family and be with my doggys. It feels long overdue and sooooo good, even my feet are happy to not have to wear a pair of high heels hehe.

"It also breaks my heart a little when i hear that some of you worry about me and need to know that I am ok, so I want to PROMISE you that I am absolutely fine and more than OK! (sic)"

When I was growing up, it was a lot of Judith Krantz and it was a lot of these women who were more beautiful than you would ever be, wealthier than you'd ever be ? like Shirley Conran's Lace, where every character was this drop-dead stunner.

Q: So it became OK for a novel's heroine to be plus-size?

A: When you look at what people were calling chick lit back then, it was very glamorous and New York-y. My woman characters were a little more grounded and a little more real. Before, if you were going to have a big girl, she was the best friend or she was going to undergo some magical transformation and turn into a beauty by the end of the book.

Q: Is chick lit thriving?

A: There are certain factions that hated the idea of chick lit, hated its popularity, hated that what they saw as these frivolous books that had nothing to say and were only about sex and shoes and shopping were doing so well. They are now doing the happy dance on what they think is chick lit's grave. I think those books are still with us. I don't think a genre that was just about sex, shoes and shopping would have any kind of staying power at all.

Q: How do you define it?

A: "Real" chick lit speaks very personally to women about their lives and about their choices. Those books are always going to be with us. Women want to read stories about characters who feel familiar and whose choices feel relatable.

Q: Is surrogacy, the focus ofThen Came You, your new novel, still a hot-button issue?

A: Surrogacy has been around since Abraham and Sarah, but money is the last great taboo. The idea that someone with enough money can just will a baby into being ? that's fascinating to me.

Q: How did you become executive producer of your own TV series?

A: The people at ABC said, "We like your books. We really like what you do with strong female characters. Why don't you see if you can come up with some TV shows for us?" I partnered with Jeff Greenstein, who writes for Desperate Housewives and was show runner on Will & Grace, and we came up with State of Georgia, about two young women who move to New York to try and make it.

Q: What's it like?

A: It's sort of Laverne & Shirley. It's a little Sex and the City. A little Ally McBeal. It's that moment in your 20s when you're right out of college and you've been defined as one thing growing up and as a student and as a young woman, and now you're on your own and get to define yourself. That moment has so much appeal for me and seemed to have the potential for a lot of comedy and a lot of emotion, too.

Q: Tell us about the show's star, Raven-Symon, who plays Georgia.

A: What we were looking for was a larger-than-life, bubbly, exuberant, confident young woman who was convinced of her own worth even when the world couldn't see it. I really think that's what we have with Raven. She's this incredibly natural comedienne.

Q: Is Georgia a classic Jennifer Weiner character?

A: The original intention was for Georgia to be a big, curvy girl, and that would be one of the obstacles she dealt with while pursuing her acting career. She wanted to play the ingnue and the bombshell, and people would want to cast her as the funny best friend. Raven has lost a lot of weight, and that's been a challenge we've been dealing with. But in terms of her sense of humor and outlook on life, Georgia's going to feel familiar to anyone who loved Canny in Good in Bed or Becky in Little Earthquakes and Addy in Best Friends Forever.

Q: You have more than 28,000 followers on Twitter (@jenniferweiner). Is it fun?

A: It's so much fun, but there's a lot of discipline, too, in that 140-characters thing ? how pithy or on point can you be in this tiny bit of space? That's a good exercise for a writer. I love live-tweeting The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. Hands down, it's the high point of any week.

?Transformers: Dark of the Moon? Premieres in NYC

Adding to the already massive amount of hype, ?Transformers: Dark of the Moon? held its New York City premiere tonight (June 28).

The action-packed third installment of the uber-popular series drew quite a crowd in Times Square, as stars like Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington Whiteley, Tyrese Gibson, Patrick Dempsey and Josh Duhamel all showed up.

Also on-hand for the "Transformers" premiere were famous siblings Willow and Jaden Smith, Alessandra Ambrosio, Erin Heatherton and singing sensation Gabrielle Union.

During a recent interview, LaBeouf chatted about the future of the franchise, and that he?ll be going out with a bang with this movie.

"I just don't think right now there's anywhere to take Sam. If you'd asked me fifteen years ago if I would be here, I would've said, 'No way.' I don't have a grand plan. There's not this grand scheme. I just fall into movies. I'm blessed in that regard. The movies I've been involved in, it's never been plotted and planned and picked.?

?I was seventeen when I met [director] Michael [Bay], and I'm sort of Michael Bay-raised. I've learned a great deal from Michael, as a person, as an actor, as a person on set. And it's not that I don't enjoy working with Michael. I love working with Michael. I would do any movie Michael wants to do. I just don't think there's anywhere to take it with Sam."

George Anthony, Father of Casey, Denies Krystal Holloway Affair Allegation

When the Casey Anthony trial began, her defense attorney, Jose Baez, threw out some stunning allegations against Casey's father, George.

Namely, that his prior abuse of Casey caused her to act erratically, and that he had an affair with a woman named Krystal Holloway who was helping him look for Casey's missing 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony.

Tuesday, on the stand, George Anthony denied any infidelity.

George Anthony Picture

"She was someone who volunteered at our site," he said. "I considered her a friend. She worked at our command center to help find Caylee."

Why does it matter to Casey Anthony's defense whether or not he had an affair with Holloway? Because of something he supposedly told her.

Holloway told police that during an intimate moment, George confided that Caylee's death was "an accident that snowballed out of control."

"Did you say that to her?" Baez asked the father of the accused.

"No," said Anthony. "I didn't confide with anyone during that time."

During the testimony, jurors swiveled their chairs towards George Anthony, watching him intently. Cindy Anthony shook her head in the gallery.

Mark Hales, Entrepreneur & Founder of Oxygen Accelerator: Are Women in Tech Playing Hide and Seek?

On May 9, 2011, I launched the Oxygen Accelerator programme in the hope of finding the tech stars of the future. But very early on, it became apparent that there was something fundamentally interesting in the applications coming through ? there were simply no women applying; well, none so far anyway!

Curiosity sent me on a journey to find out where all the women are and if this is a problem in this sector? In October 2010, The UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) revealed that only 5.3 per cent of women are employed in the SET sector ? that?s one in twenty. If that seems reasonable to you, then compare that to a huge shift in men in the same occupation ? 31.3 per cent ? and that?s in a total of 5.5 million SET workers of men and women.

In the UK, women account for 45.1 per cent of the workforce, but this is not emulated in the technology industry. There are several well-established tech journalists and women tech leaders/entrepreneurs who have their opinions that women aren?t assertive enough and don?t realise the commercial value of ?PR-ing? themselves to secure funding. I?m of the opinion that there are many astute women entrepreneurs that probably just don?t know how to. However, as most entrepreneurs will tell you, if you?ve got passion, a great idea and a business plan to back it, everything else can fall into place, including refining the business plan to ensure investments are secured.

But what worries me about the tech industry is that I simply do not see enough women innovators in comparison to those you find in arts/culture, retail, beauty, etc. And what I want to know is, why?

This is not to say there aren?t any women leaders, because we can see many who are (Rashmi Sinha of SlideShare; Kaliya Hamlin of Shes Geeky; Shireen Mitchell of Digital Sistas, who wrote about her experiences after being recognized by AlwaysOn; Mary Hodder, who is working on her second startup; Irene Au of Google; Amy Jo Kim of ShuffleBrain; Heather Harde of TechCrunch; and Lynne d. Johnson, formerly of Fast Company and now with the Advertising Research Foundation), but I?m mostly interested in seeking women innovators.

Has the tech industry unwittingly created an invisible male-only policy that has shunned the fairer sex from reining their interest in this industry? Or are the women entrepreneurs genuinely not interested in technology?

I spoke with Deb Leary, CEO Forensic Pathways Ltd & National President of the British Association of Women Entrepreneurs, who commented: ?My opinion is that there are many women entrepreneurs out there in the tech industry doing fantastic, ground breaking things, but they don?t either see the value or have the confidence to put themselves forward as ?thought leaders?. And ?thought leaders? and role models is exactly what the industry needs. Many believe that unless they know everything about everything they have no right to comment. I say it?s time to step up to the plate, ladies.?

Science and Technology is a powerful combination and we are very keen to help develop successful companies. It?s statistically apparent that there are women out there who are super intelligent, successful and able to perform exceptionally well in a competitive environment. But where are they now?

Accelerator programmes are built specifically to find talent and nurture businesses and this is the exact forum to draw more women into this industry - to create outstanding leaders of the future through good-old-fashion innovation, creativity and hard graft. My advice to them is to stop hiding and come out and play!

This is a guest post by Mark Hales, entrepreneur and founder of Oxygen Accelerator.

Do you agree with Mark's point of view? If you would like to respond to Mark's article, please leave a comment!

There are still 7 days left to apply for the Oxygen Accelerator, a 13-week intensive mentor led bootcamp for technology startups. For more information, see their website and our article announcing a prize of 75,00 for the most improved start up on the programme.

Snooki and Jionni LaValle: Back Together?

Snooki and Jionni LaValle recently broke up.

Yet here they are back in Seaside, a few short weeks after he peaced out of Florence, looking happy as can be with JWoww and beau Roger Williams.

The cast returned to Jersey this week after spending the spring abroad. It didn't take long for Snooki and Jionni to reunite for a Garden State stroll:

Snooki, Jionni, JWoww, Roger

Fortunately for the photographers, the little people walked in front.

Are they officially back on? Were they ever off? Do you want them to be together? Do you care? Would you hit it? So many unanswered questions linger.

Jersey Shore returns for its Italian-style fourth season August 4. Filming for the following season is already underway, with no plans to replace the cast.

Rocky Kistner: Greening of the Prairie -- Not Your Father's Kansas Anymore

In the breadbasket of Kansas, where rusty, rotating oil wells pump silently in fields of wheat, corn and alfalfa, a clean energy revolution has taken root. Deep in the Bible Belt, it?s an unlikely place for something so new, afrontier town wherepioneersbattled nature?s dangerous elementsto carve out a new life.

But tragedy and adversity can leadto positive change, and that?s what happenedto the prairie town of Greensburg. Four years ago, a ferocious 1.7 mile wide EF-5 tornado packing 200 mile-an-hour winds roared through this sleepy agricultural community of 1,500.In the flash of an eye, it destroyed95 percent of the buildings, leaving 11 dead among huge heaps of twisted metal, brick and wood.

But you wouldn?t know it now. Instead wind turbines risehigh above the prairie, rotating like massive pinwheels powered by thejet stream blowing west to east out of the Rockies. Gleaming cutting-edge buildings have popped up near Main Streetlike high-tech prairie dogs peaking out oftheir holes. It was all part of a rebuilding plan that came together with amazing speed, as my NRDC colleague Kaid Benfield noted in this blog three years ago.

Greensburg wind farm on outskirts of townPhotos: Rocky Kistner/NRDC

Now much of that plan has been finished. Out of the tornado?s devastation, new energy efficient buildings include the GreensburgCity Hall, a sprawling K-12 school, a nationally recognized critical care hospital, even a John Deere farm equipment dealership, all built to the world?s highest Platinum LEED energy standards, all powered by a10-turbine wind farm that generates12.5 megawatts of power. That's more than enoughelectricity for this small community.

The Greensburg tornado was a harbinger of the destruction unleashed in Tuscaloosa and Joplin just a few months ago. While community leaders of those devastated communities still mourn their losses and make plans to rebuild, their Kansas neighbors say they feel their pain. They?ve been there.

Just ask Mary Sweet, anamicable hospital administrator of the Kiowa County Memorial Hospital. Four years ago she was out of town on a business meeting when the tornado ripped through the community.Rushing back to her loved ones, she had no idea if her own children had survived, even as she got calls from hospital employees trapped inside the rubble. Fortunatelyall of her family and hospital employees made it through safely. But the damage to the hospital was total. Mary wasn?t sure they could ever rebuild.

With the help of communities, federal agencies and businesses across the country, Greensburg did rebuild?and more. Officials and residents embarked on an unprecedented plan to create a town that adapted world?s highest efficiency standards. Mary?s hospital is a cornerstone of their efforts, the country?s first critical care facility to be certified Platinum LEED.

Mary Sweet and thecountyhospitalin GreensburgPhotos: Rocky Kistner/NRDC

But Mary and others in the community are quick to defend their energy efficiency efforts, not for theirnotoriety, but fortheir business sense. ?We didn?t build it for the label,? she says. ?We built it because it?s the wise way to build.? Mary figures the county will make back its investment long before the hospital needs to replace its facility. She already hopes to install another wind turbine to help cut costs further.

So recently when officials and representatives from Tuscaloosa came to visit Greensburg and learn about their rebuilding success, Mary says they were surprised what they saw.?They came here thinking we were a bunch of tree huggers,? Mary says. ?Instead they found out we?re pretty normal. I think they came away with some ideas they didn?t know about before. For us, we like to give back to the people who helped us by sharing our experiences with others.?

Tuscaloosa officials apparently wereimpressed. Here?s what they posted on Facebook about their visit:

The RT Task Force gave a presentation on what they learned from the city of Greensburg and plans to have a strong relationship with them in order to make sure we come back stronger, better, and safer. The presentation highlighted examples of how we can use energy efficient construction methods to create more functional & sustainable landscapes for Tuscaloosa. The small town of Greenburg has made a big difference in how community's rebuild after disasters, as they have been pioneers ofstrategiesthat create environmental and economic win-win solutions. The rebuilding process for theCity of Tuscaloosa will also set a standard for recovery efforts and will be a platform for other towns to use so that we can all respond to disaster more efficiently and come back better than before!

Greensburg mayor Bob Dixson says helping communities like Tuscaloosa rebuild is exactly the core of their mission. The formerpostal official,a tall John Wayne look-alike incowboy boots and jeans, speaks frequentlyat meetings across the country, extolling the virtues of the energy efficient revolution his townnowrepresents. Here's how the mayor puts it:

?Being green has political connotations, but it?s not about color, it?s about the concept of sustainability and the ability to endure. There is a tremendous longing for community here and we need to return to our sustainable lifestyle and learn from our ancestors. We learned from the dirty 30s of the dust bowl. We have learned from this disaster there are new opportunities to be on the cutting edge of technology and share our stories with the rest of the world.?

Kansas windpower from an older eraPhoto: Rocky Kistner/NRDC

Those seem more like words spoken fromthe 60s than today, butthey are the heart-felt sentiments of many I met in this small town.Still, Greensburg is far fromthe Age of Aquarius. It's continuingto rebuild afterthe disaster that destroyed it four years ago, and locals admit theyhave a long way to go. Business investment istough to come by as the stubborn recessionstill grips the land. But when you talk to people here, theyhave a boundless optimism, an infectious confidence that theyare doing what?s right. And what's smart.

Ask residentshere what they think of the politicians fighting over energy policies in Washington and they roll their eyes.Renewable energy and efficiency standards aren't pipe dreams to these folkson the prairie. They are real and theycreate jobs and save people money. Many wonderit works in themiddle of Kansas, why can't it workeverywhere else?

That's a question more and more visitorsask too. Greensburg has become a key stopover for people interested in sustainable communities. Locals are proud of what they've created. They believe sooner or later what they have done will catch on in other placesbecausepeople won't have a choice. The high cost of climate-changing,polluting fossil fuels will become too great.Like the huge mechanical combines that evolved from the mule and the plough, locals believe the energy efficient technologies and wind turbinesthey've invested in will become commonplacein the 21st Century.

In a way, it'sironic that it took a tornado to change the course of Greensburg's future. This isn?t the Kansas of Dorothy andToto anymore. This is America'sfuture. And it'salive andgrowingstronger in the nation?s heartland.
