Pippa 'Her Royal Hotness' Middleton heats up French Open

Pippa Middleton turned heads as she watched Sweden's Robin Soderling playing France's Gilles Simon during the French Open.

Set, match, game.

England's favorite little sister is expanding her reign as "Her Royal Hotness" - a nickname given her by her legions of adoring fans - beyond Great Britain and into the City of Lights.

Pippa Middleton, donning her trademark oversized Gucci sunglasses, sat courtside at the French Open Monday, drawing attention away from the six-hour tennis match in play before her.

The younger Middleton turned heads in her low-cut black top and ruffled skirt as she enjoyed the tennis match between defending champion Rafael Nadal and Ivan Ljubicic in Paris alongside a female pal and two guy friends.

Pippa has been fascinating fans worldwide since she upstaged big sister Kate in a form-fitting Sarah Burton bridesmaid dress at the Royal Wedding last month.

Middleton's influence has also already impacted multiple different industries - her fit figure reportedly sparked increased demands for both butt enhancement surgeries and tanning lotions, and the Modalu bag she carried after the wedding was renamed "The Pippa" in her honor.

But the glowing Middleton's trek to Paris wasn't merely a publicity stunt.

The 27-year-old party planner is a tennis fan, and is even believed to be a member of the exclusive Queen's Club, the venue for one of Wimbledon's annual warm-up events.

And it seems like tennis love runs in the family. Older sister Kate is rumored to be presenting the prizes at Wimbledown this summer.

The twosome walked into the popular fast food joint with another couple, as one eyewitness told, "They seemed very close and very happy," adding that after the football stud footed the bill, "They walked out of the fast food restaurant," all the while "Mark was flashing a huge smile."

Pop singer Avril Lavigne throws out the ceremonial first pitch before an MLB baseball game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cleveland Indians.

Well, she is the motherf----- princess.

The Tampa Bay Rays were left apologizing profusely to fans after pop star Avril Lavigne let loose a string of expletives while she was having microphone malfunctions at the beginning of her performance at Tropicana Field on Saturday.

The punk princess was performing after the Rays lost to the Cleveland Indians on Saturday as part of the team?s concert series.

According to the St. Petersburg Times, she also ranted about how things like that happen at a live show, especially at a baseball stadium.

In response, fans continued to boo.

"The Rays demand profanity-free performances from all of our concert performers, and we are extremely disappointed by the language used in last night?s show," Ray's spokesman Rick Vaughn said in a statement issued Sunday. "It is not consistent with the family-friendly atmosphere that Tropicana Field is known for."

Lavigne has yet to publicly comment on her postgame meltdown.

LeAnn Rimes flaunts bikini body: 'I'm a healthy girl'

LeAnn Rimes also showed off a tattoo on her hip that reads 'Still I Rise.'

Despite constant criticism for her drastic weight loss, LeAnn Rimes is flaunting her scary-skinny body in a new series of bikini photos posted on Twitter that were taken during her honeymoon over the weekend.

The singer-actress was all smiles on the beach Sunday in Cabo San Lucas when she showed off her extremely thin frame in a tiny blue Mikoh string bikini, accessorized with sunglasses and oversized earrings.

Rimes, 28, has been enjoying her delayed postwedding vacation with new husband Eddie Cibrian, 37, at the luxurious Esperanza Resort since last week. The couple, who wed April 22, planned to take their honeymoon at a later date due to their work schedules.

When one of Rimes' Twitter followers said she looked "scary skinny" in her bikini photos and pointed out that she had "a lot of bones showing through skin," the blond beauty snapped back.

"Those are called abs, not bones, love," Rimes wrote back.

She added, "This is my body and I can promise you I'm a healthy girl. I'm just lean. [Thanks] for your concern, but no need to be."

While her diminishing weight hasn't been a problem for her, Rimes' balance has proved otherwise. She posted additional photos of her left foot wrapped in an Ace bandage after she took a tumble earlier in the day.

"Wow, my head and my heel are killing me from slipping on a rock," she tweeted. "Ouch. Needs to get better fast."

Lindsay Lohan: What She Can and Can't Do Under House Arrest

Lindsay Lohan in New York

Splash News Online

For the next month or so, Lindsay Lohan will be confined to her Venice, Calif., townhouse as part of her sentence for her theft conviction.

It's certainly not jail ? visitors, Internet and phone are all allowed ? but a source tells PEOPLE the 24-year-old actress still has a few rules to follow, most of which are standard for home confinement:

ALLOWED

Leaving home only for medical appointments or to go to the probation department, as long as advance notice is given.

Visitors can come and go without restrictions.

 Unlimited phone and Internet use.

NOT ALLOWED

Going outside the "interior premises" of the home without prior authorization; that'll set off her ankle bracelet.

Going to work-related events outside the home. (Lohan also can't perform her community service while confined.)

Tampering with the ankle bracelet, which would sound an alarm to her monitors.

As Drug Shortages Rise, Hospitals Hunt For Substitutes

WASHINGTON ? A growing shortage of medications for a host of illnesses ? from cancer to cystic fibrosis to cardiac arrest ? has hospitals scrambling for substitutes to avoid patient harm, and sometimes even delaying treatment.

"It's just a matter of time now before we call for a drug that we need to save a patient's life and we find out there isn't any," says Dr. Eric Lavonas of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

The problem of scarce supplies or even completely unavailable medications isn't a new one but it's getting markedly worse. The number listed in short supply has tripled over the past five years, to a record 211 medications last year. While some of those have been resolved, another 89 drug shortages have occurred in the first three months of this year, according to the University of Utah's Drug Information Service. It tracks shortages for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

The vast majority involve injectable medications used mostly by medical centers ? in emergency rooms, ICUs and cancer wards. Particular shortages can last for weeks or for many months, and there aren't always good alternatives. Nor is it just a U.S. problem, as other countries report some of the same supply disruptions.

It's frightening for families.

At Miami Children's Hospital, doctors had to postpone for a month the last round of chemotherapy for 14-year-old Caroline Pallidine, because of a months-long nationwide shortage of cytarabine, a drug considered key to curing a type of leukemia.

"There's always a fear, if she's going so long without chemo, is there a chance this cancer's going to come back?" says her mother, Marta Pallidine, who says she'll be nervous until Caroline finishes her final treatments scheduled for this week.

"In this day and age, we really shouldn't be having this kind of problem and putting our children's lives at risk," she adds.

There are lots of causes, from recalls of contaminated vials, to trouble importing raw ingredients, to spikes in demand, to factories that temporarily shut down for quality upgrades.

Some experts pointedly note that pricier brand-name drugs seldom are in short supply. The Food and Drug Administration agrees that the overarching problem is that fewer and fewer manufacturers produce these older, cheaper generic drugs, especially the harder-to-make injectable ones. So if one company has trouble ? or decides to quit making a particular drug ? there are few others able to ramp up their own production to fill the gap, says Valerie Jensen, who heads FDA's shortage office.

The shortage that's made the most headlines is a sedative used on death row. But on the health-care front, shortages are wide-ranging, including:

_Thiotepa, used with bone marrow transplants.

_A whole list of electrolytes, injectable nutrients crucial for certain premature infants and tube-feeding of the critically ill.

_Norepinephrine injections for septic shock.

_A cystic fibrosis drug named acetylcysteine.

_Injections used in the ER for certain types of cardiac arrest.

_Certain versions of pills for ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

_Some leuprolide hormone injections used in fertility treatment.

No one is tracking patient harm. But last fall, the nonprofit Institute for Safe Medication Practices said it had two reports of people who died from the wrong dose of a substitute painkiller during a morphine shortage.

"Every pharmacist in every hospital across the country is working to make sure those things don't happen, but shortages create the perfect storm for a medication error to happen," says University of Utah pharmacist Erin Fox, who oversees the shortage-tracking program.

What can be done?

The FDA has taken an unusual step, asking some foreign companies to temporarily ship to the U.S. their own versions of some scarce drugs that aren't normally sold here. That eased shortages of propofol, a key anesthesia drug, and the transplant drug thiotepa.

Affected companies say they're working hard to eliminate backlogs. For instance, Hospira Inc., the largest maker of those injectable drugs, says it is increasing production capacity and working with FDA "to address shortage situations as quickly as possible and to help prevent recurrence."

But the Generic Pharmaceutical Association says some shortages are beyond industry control, such as FDA inspections or stockpiling that can exacerbate a shortage.

"Drug shortages of any kind are a complex problem that require broad-based solutions from all stakeholders," adds the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a fellow trade group.

Lawmakers are getting involved. Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., is urging the Federal Trade Commission to consider if any pending drug-company mergers would create or exacerbate shortages.

Also, pending legislation would require manufacturers to give FDA advance notice of problems such as manufacturing delays that might trigger a shortage. The FDA cannot force a company to make a drug, but was able to prevent 38 close calls from turning into shortages last year by speeding approval of manufacturing changes or urging competing companies to get ready to meet a shortfall.

"No patient's life should have to be at risk when there is a drug somewhere" that could be used, says Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who introduced the bill.

Justin Timberlake's Race Car Wins Indy 500

Can Justin Timberlake add 'Winner of the Indianapolis 500' to his resume? Well, sort of!

The race car sponsored by Justin Timberlake's clothing line, William Rast, won the famous Indy 500 Sunday.

According to Us Weekly, racing vet Dan Wheldon drove the William Rast car to victory.

"What a Memorial Day weekend! The William Rast car just won the Indy 500!!!!" Timberlake tweeted shortly after the race.

The singer-turned-actor also tweeted his congrats and thanks to everyone involved in the win.

"Congrats to Dan Wheldon, the WR racing team and everyone else who put in the hard work for this victory! Unreal!" he wrote.

Timberlake created the William Rast clothing line with his childhood friend Trace Ayala in 2006.

But the win for Timberlake and William Rast came with its fair share of drama. Rookie JR Hildebrand crashed his car just seconds from being crowned the Indy 500 champ, opening the way Wheldon to race to victory.

Check out the video below of Wheldon as he wins his second Indy 500 title in the William Rast car below.

Attuma a 'Worthy' barbarian of the deep in 'Fear Itself'

By Brian Truitt, USA TODAY

When it comes to sea monsters, Nessie and the Kraken have nothing on the barbaric Attuma.

  • Already a savage undersea warlord, Attuma becomes even more powerful when transformed by one of the Serpent's mystical hammers.

    Marvel Comics

Already a savage undersea warlord, Attuma becomes even more powerful when transformed by one of the Serpent's mystical hammers.

Marvel Comics

Already a savage undersea warlord, Attuma becomes even more powerful when transformed by one of the Serpent's mystical hammers.

The big, bad, blue-skinned supervillain is the star of the latest issue of the Fear Itself: The Worthy digital series, available Tuesday for free download on the Marvel Comics app for iPhone and iPad, Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited and Marvel Comics on Chrome.

Every Monday, USA TODAY gives you an exclusive look at that week's Worthy character and issue, this week by writer Tom DeFalco and artist Mario Alberti.

Who he is: Attuma was already a formidable foe before he was transformed into a powerhouse thanks to picking up one of the Serpent's mystical hammers in Fear Itself. An Atlantean warlord and longtime enemy of Namor the Sub-Mariner, Attuma has always believed himself to be the prophesized conqueror of Atlantis, yet no matter whom he has allied himself with over the years, he has always been stopped. Now, that may change as he's part of the Worthy army and is laying waste to the worlds under the sea and on the surface.

Vicious intent: Attuma has always been one of the more savage super-villains in the Marvel Universe, DeFalco says, but we've never known why. "I wanted to find out what sparked this savagery in the first place and what continues to motivate him. I got a real chance to see beyond man within the barbarian. A prophecy almost destroyed his race and led to a life of torture for him. Having lost so much because of this prophecy, Attuma now is willing to risk everything to accomplish it."

An event staple: Fans have seen Attuma in other major crossover events such as Atlantis Attacks and The Evolutionary War, so he's the perfect villain for something as large a scale as Fear Itself. Attuma is a powerful adversary who has never considered retreat or defeat an option," DeFalco says. "He is always fighting to the death and will never stop ? no matter what you throw at him!"

Why he's Worthy: "Attuma is a character that doesn't really have a deep history, but is such a great visual. So much of the world is water, it made sense that really there should have been like three Worthy that were solely involved with underwater activities," Fear Itself writer Matt Fraction says, laughing. "I wanted a sea monster. There's a sequence in Fear Itself 4 where a kid is fishing, and there's a blue tide of dead Atlanteans who start washing up on shore, one after the next after the next. We cut to Attuma just in a rampaging murder spree, like a human shark underwater. I wanted the idea of something monstrous happening on 80 percent of the world that we can't see, but trust me, it's down there and you should be very afraid of it. And it makes the hair on the back of my neck go up."

From the editor's desk: "Attuma is a barbarian in the classic sense, a sort of undersea Genghis Khan," says Tom Brevoort, editor on Fear Itself. "But his newfound divinity dispenses with the need for an army or followers or just about anything. It boils him down to his essence, which is an unstoppable killing machine of the ocean depths who subsists on the fear of his enemies ? or those who just happen to cross his path."

DVD Extra: Steve McQueen revs up 'Le Mans'

By Steve Jones, USA TODAY

In the 1960s and 1970s, cool was defined by two words ?Steve McQueen.

  • Steve McQueen raced competively to support himself in the 1950s before his acting career took off.

    Warner Home Video

Steve McQueen raced competively to support himself in the 1950s before his acting career took off.

Warner Home Video

Steve McQueen raced competively to support himself in the 1950s before his acting career took off.

He was always the handsome outsider whose quiet confidence, intrepid attitude and contempt for authority gave him a magnetism few stars could match.

McQueen also had a penchant for satisfying fans' need for speed. Whether it was in Bullitt's often imitated, but never duplicated chase scene through San Francisco streets in a Ford Mustang GT, or The Great Escape's harrowing motorcycle flight from a P.O.W. camp on a Triumph TR6 Trophy with German soldiers in pursuit, he literally revved up the action. And though the studios forced him to give way to stuntmen for the most dangerous maneuvers, McQueen spent plenty of time in the driver's seat.

The same is true in Le Mans (1971, Paramount, G, $20; Blu-ray, $25), which has been digitally restored and is being released on Blu-ray for the first time in celebration of its 40th anniversary. The cult classic depicts France's annual 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world's oldest and most famous endurance auto race. McQueen plays a man oblivious to the inherent danger, and addicted to the rush that it gives.

"What's so important about driving faster than anyone else?" McQueen's Michael Delaney is asked by the widow (Elga Andersen) of a driver who crashed and died in the race a year earlier.

"A lot of people go through life doing things badly," responds Delaney, who was badly hurt in the same accident. "Racing is important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting."

Waiting, it seems, was not in the actor's makeup. McQueen, who died of cancer at age 50 in 1980, spent much of his life racing motorcycles and automobiles. While taking acting lessons in the early 1950s, he supported himself by winning motorcycle competitions. In 1970, he finished second in Florida's Grand Prix-style 12 Hours at Sebring (won by Mario Andretti) with professional driver teammate Peter Revson in a Porsche 908 Spyder that would be used as a camera car during the filming of Le Mans. At Sebring, McQueen ? who had broken his foot in six places in a motorbike crash two weeks earlier ? drove wearing a cast.

It's no idle boast, then, when the film's trailer (a bonus feature with the new release) proclaims: "Le Mans. The men. The machines. The motion picture. Steve McQueen stars in it. No one else could." Also included is the mini-feature Filming at Speed: The Making of the Movie Le Mans, hosted by the star's son, Chad McQueen (he too is an actor and auto racer, and as a child was on the set). Le Mans was made on the heels of his father's 1968 blockbuster Bullitt, and he said it was Steve's goal to make "the ultimate motor racing movie."

The filmmakers, including director Lee H. Katzin, went to great lengths to get everything right, bringing 20 camera crews to film the 1969 race just to learn how to shoot it the following year when they were making the movie. The first half-hour of the film (which has sparse plot and dialogue in general) doesn't have a scripted word. Instead, it lets you drink in the sights and sounds surrounding the 8.5-mile Circuit de la Sarthe, around which cars hit speeds in excess of 230 mph in the grueling endurance race. The camera takes you into the bustle of pit row, where fans, drivers, mechanics and journalists jostle each other, and to the tent communities of racing enthusiasts along the countryside route. What story there is centers on the fierce rivalry between the Porsche and Ferrari race teams.

There are no CGI tricks at work here, but you can almost feel the ground vibrations and the whip of the wind as the Porsche 917s and Ferrari 512s fly by, swapping paint and navigating hairpin turns. The adrenaline rush is so palpable, the imagination seems to supply the only missing elements ? the smells of sweat, burnt rubber and exhaust fumes. You may even catch yourself tamping the brakes as the gap between that guardrail or those tail lights up ahead rapidly closes.

Al Martinez: Old Glory lives on in our hearts and our breast

I was down at Sam's getting a haircut the other day when I spotted Doris, the tattooed lady. She was heavier than when I saw her at a party several years ago where she entertained the guests by exposing herself enough to reveal the image of an American flag just over her right breast. Or maybe it was her left breast, I can't remember.

She was the wife of a television producer, and all you had to do after she'd had a glass of wine or so was to say, "Show us your tattoo, Doris!" and down or up or open came her blouse to display Old Glory. Sometimes she would wiggle in such a way as to simulate the flag waving in an autumn breeze.

I thought it was fitting that I mention her on Memorial Day when we are thinking patriotic thoughts, and Doris was among the first women I knew to show her colors. When I saw her in front of Sam's I said hello, but she didn't recognize me so I didn't ask if she still had the flag tattooed on her bosom. She was wearing a sweater and I couldn't tell.

At one time tattoos were confined to sailors who got drunk in Shanghai and had their bodies imprinted with likenesses of snakes, dragons, ships at sea or the names of women across their chests, although the more family-minded simply had "mom" on their upper arms.

I used to know a biker named Sullivan who had a tattoo shop off Sherman Way in the days when only men had tattoos. He lived in a back room with a python in a glass cage. One day a guy came in with his girlfriend,

studied some drawings on the wall, turned to Sullivan and said, "How much for a butterfly on her ass?" I didn't stick around to see if Sullivan actually did draw a butterfly on her behind, but I still consider it a seminal moment in the feminist movement.

It is different today. Doris, the Butterfly Lady and others like them led a new wave of women who found body art an appealing assertion of their independence. They set out to prove they could be just as stupid as men by adorning themselves with neat little chains around their ankles or garish psychedelic images here and there on their backs or around their belly buttons.

We owe all of this to Otzi the Ice Man, a relic of the Bronze Age whose 5,000-year-old tattooed body was discovered frozen in the mountains between Austria and Italy. He had 57 tattoos on his legs and across his stomach. They consisted mostly of straight lines because those were the days before Andy Warhol, and mankind didn't know much about pop art.

I hope this adds to your education regarding a popular form of body disfigurement rooted in antiquity. I'm sure the march of feminine equality will find women tattooing themselves all around their erogenous zones, but I'm not going to be the one to ask to see them.

Orlando Bloom Joins Cast of The Hobbit

Orlando Bloom is on his way back to Middle Earth.

Despite his character not having a role in the novel version of The Hobbit, director Peter Jackson confirms that Bloom will, indeed, portray Legolas in the wildly-anticipated film.

"Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas," Jackson wrote on his Facebook page. "I'm excited to announce today that we'll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I'm thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn't! I guess that's why he makes such a wonderful elf."

The Hobbit will hit theaters in late 2012.

Paris Hilton: Ready to Bring You Into Her World

Doing her best to drum up interest in her upcoming TV show, Paris Hilton closed out the week with a full day of promotional stops before heading off for a fabulous Memorial Day weekend getaway.

The hotel heiress stepped out on Friday (May 27) to attend a press event at Kitson in Los Angeles before dropping by the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" as the evening's celebrity guest.

During her visit with Jay, Miss Hilton partook in a backstage video session before being driven onstage via motorcycle - as she recently became an owner of a motorsports racing team.

Among the "Tonight Show" topics of conversation, Paris chatted about her new mansion in Beverly Hills, as well as her new series "The World According to Paris" - which debuts on the Oxygen network on June 1st.

She also told a joke about Lindsay Lohan during the appearance, recalling a time in which a homeless lady complimented her earrings. Hilton said, "I gave them to her," before explaining that the woman then mistook her for the troubled "Mean Girls" starlet. To this, Paris said, "If I was Lindsay I'd be stealing the earrings, not giving them away."

Once finished up with the busy day of press efforts, the 30-year-old hightailed it to LAX Airport for a flight bound for New York City - where she caught a ride to meet up with the family in the Hamptons.

Of the travels, Paris happily tweeted, "On my way to The Hampton's to spend a relaxing Memorial Day weekend with my family. See you soon @KathyHilton! Love you!"

President Obama to return to NYC for first time since controversial speech

President Obama will make his first visit to NYC since his controversial speech this coming June.

President Obama will make his first visit to NYC since his controversial speech this coming June.

Will President Obama's next big-ticket fund-raising effort in New York be a dinner for bucks - or schmucks?

Political insiders are watchng carefully to see how the President will fare when he returns to New York for two events on June 23 - the first time since his controversial speech in which he urged Israel to give back land it has occupied since 1967 to the Palestinians.

"Everyone's going to be watching closely to see what the response is," says one political source. "They better pack the place."

The first event is an exclusive $35,800-a-ticket dinner at Chef Daniel Boulud's four-star restaurant Daniel on E. 65th St.

The Wall Street-heavy host committee, which is still in formation, includes Avenue Capital Group hedge-fund CEO Marc Lasry; Taconic Capital co-founder Frank Brosens, who, following the 2008 crash, was briefly the front-runner to head the government's Troubled Asset Relief Program; Pfizer Executive VP of global communications Sally Susman; Boston Provident partner Orin Kramer; Centerbridge Partners founder Mark Gallogly, who's also a member of the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board; The Observatory Group's Jane Hartley; Rizvi Traverse Chief Investment Officer Suhail Rizvi, and Quadrangle Group's Joshua Steiner.

Obama's keynote speech on the Mideast, which he gave earlier this month, did not go down well with past and present New York pols, including former Mayor Ed Koch and Brooklyn Rep. Anthony Weiner, who has a large Jewish constituency. According to Reuters, exit polls from the 2008 election showed that 78% of Jewish voters chose Obama over his rival, John McCain.

The $35,800 question is how many deep-pocketed donors has Obama alienated. "People are concerned and frustrated," the source says. "But they're not walking away from him."

Meanwhile, a recent Politico.com post indicated that Obama's reelection team has been surprised by support from gay donors. So, organizers shouldn't have trouble packing the massive Sheraton hotel for a second fund-raiser that the President is slated to attend that's geared toward the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender crowd.

Tickets for the soiree range from $1,250 for an individual to $35,800 per couple for a spot on the "Chair committee. "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris will host, and the invitation promises a "Special" musical guest.

Kristin Neff: The Motivational Power of Self-Compassion

The number-one reason people give for why they aren't more self-compassionate is the fear that they will be too easy on themselves. Without constant self-criticism to spur myself on, people worry, won't I just skip work, eat three tubs of ice cream and watch Oprah reruns all day? In others words, isn't self-compassion really the same thing as self-indulgence?

Before answering that question, it's first worth considering whether self-criticism is really the great motivator it's cracked up to be. Research shows that self-critics are much more likely to be anxious and depressed -- not exactly get-up-and-go mindsets. They also have lower self-efficacy beliefs (i.e., self-confidence in their abilities), which undermines their potential for success. The habit of self-criticism engenders fear of failure, meaning that self-critics often don't even try achieving their goals because the possibility of failure is unacceptable. Even more problematic, self-critics have a hard time seeing themselves clearly and identifying needed areas of improvement because they know the self-punishment that will ensue if they admit the truth. Much better to deny there's a problem or, even better, blame it on someone else.

But is a compassionate response to our shortcomings any better? Yes.

It's relatively easy to see when we think about how a compassionate and caring parent might motivate a child who is struggling. Although parenting manuals of the past often endorsed a harsh and critical approach -- spare the rod and spoil the child -- decades of research have shown that this tactic is counterproductive. Let's say your teenage daughter Mary comes home from school with a failing math grade. If you say, "You're so stupid and lame! What a loser! You're hopeless and will never amount to anything!" is that really going to help motivate Mary? Instead it will probably depress her to the point of wanting to give up math all together. Much more effective would be to take an understanding and supportive approach: "I know you're disappointed, especially since you need to get good math scores to get into college, and clearly something is not working in your study routine. But I know you can do it, and I'll help you in any way I can. Maybe you need to spend more time doing homework, or go to a tutor." This compassionate approach is much more likely to give Mary the emotional resources needed to pick herself up and try again.

Note that a caring mother does not tell her child "don't worry about it" if she's making failing grades in school. Parents want their children to be healthy and happy, and blowing off problems that need attention will only make things worse. Good parents don't let their kids get away with anything -- they set healthy boundaries, say no, tell their kids to eat vegetables and not just candy. But they do it in a way that maximizes rather than undermines the support needed to succeed.

It's exactly the same when we take a caring and compassionate approach with ourselves. Compassion is concerned with the alleviation of suffering. When we feel compassion for our own pain -- especially when the pain comes from our maladaptive habits and behaviors -- we want to heal our pain. We want to makes changes and improvements that will help us suffer less. While the motivational power of self-criticism comes from fear of self-punishment, the motivational power of self-compassion comes from the desire to be healthy. Self-compassion recognizes that failure is not only inevitable, but it's also our best teacher, something to be explored rather than avoided at all costs. Self-compassion also allows us to acknowledge areas of personal weakness by recognizing that imperfection is part of the shared human experience. We can then work on improving ourselves, not because we're unacceptable as we are, but because we want to thrive and be happy.

These are not just "nice" ideas. There is an ever-increasing body of research that attests to the motivational power of self-compassion. Self-compassionate people set high standards for themselves, but they aren't as upset when they don't meet their goals. Instead, research shows that they're more likely to set new goals for themselves after failure rather than wallowing in feelings of frustration and disappointment. Self-compassionate people have more intrinsic motivation in life -- trying hard because they want to learn and grow, not because they need to impress themselves or others. Self-compassionate people are more likely to take responsibility for their past mistakes, while acknowledging them with greater emotional equanimity. Research also shows that self-compassion helps people engage in healthier behaviors like sticking to their weight-loss goals, exercising, quitting smoking and seeking medical care when needed.

So self-compassion is not the same as being easy on ourselves. It's a way of nurturing ourselves so that we can reach our full potential.
