Google?s Susan Wojcicki Takes Lead Of Engineering & Ads ... and Chickens!

Susan Wojcicki is responsible for 96% of Google?s revenues,�$28.2 billion in 2010. Her blockbuster contributions to the search engine giant include AdSense (Google ads served on millions of sites and blogs) and the YouTube and DoubleClick acquisitions?price tag $1.65 billion and $3.1 billion, respectively.

Three weeks ago Wojcicki was promoted to senior vice president� in charge of product management and engineering, one of seven generals reporting to newly installed commander-in-chief Larry Page.

Wojcicki has been called, ?The most important Googler you?ve never heard of.? For the record, she?s the one who leased out her garage to Page and Sergey Brin (now married to her sister, Anne, the co-founder of personal DNA test�23andMe) and their embryonic search engine 13 years ago. She?s is the company?s 16th hire and first marketing manager.

Inevitably, other firsts come up: one of the first female Googlers, the first to have a baby and the top woman in the company.

Like publicity-seeking, all that?s largely besides the point for Wojcicki, 42, a Palo Alto native and daughter of a retired chair of the physics department at Stanford University and revered high school journalism teacher. She says she is more interested in the ?Zen? of working hard, living in the moment and focusing on the day-to-day needs of her four children.

True to form, she won?t reveal any details about her children. Which is why it?s so surprising when Wojcicki practically giggles a confession: she?s recently become a chicken person. She?s taken in 14 backyard egg-layers, breeds such as Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock and Buff Orpington. ?With technology, some people are more into it than others,? she says. ?But everyone can relate to animals.?
