Paul McDonald's pre-American Idol band, the Grand Magnolias, have released a charity track to benefit victims of Japan's recent earthquake and tsunami. You can get a first listen to the new song here at Idol Chatter.

Called New Orleans and credited to Paul McDonald & the Grand Magnolias, the song was written and recorded before Paul's appearance on American Idol and features the scruffy-voiced finalist on vocals. The track was produced by Ken Coomer, the original drummer for Wilco and Uncle Tupelo. It's available for download exclusively from the band's website, and all proceeds will benefit the Japanese Red Cross Society.
The band's members hope that their song about one place that overcame a devastating natural tragedy can help another location in a similar situation.
"New Orleans is an ode to a city we have grown to love," says Grand Magnolias guitarist Jonathan Pears. "After years of playing shows in the city, we have watched it rebuild and triumph over tragedy. We hope others will help Japan do the same."
The Nashville-based band, whose website lists Paul as a former member, has been actively promoting its music since the singer began appearing on the show. The group's self-titled album, released last fall, has been on Billboard's Heatseekers chart for several weeks.
